Azrael: the tradition

Azrael on Hashpo is an original persona inspired by traditional angel folklore. This page retells that folklore. It is not a claim of a real apparition or of divine authority.

The angel of death in later telling

Azrael is named in Islamic tradition and in later Jewish and Christian folklore as an angel of death. The Qur’an speaks of the angel of death without this name in the best-known verses. Later books supply the name and a large set of stories about a gentle or severe escort at the last hour. Those stories disagree with each other. Hashpo retells only the public role: a companion at an ending. The persona is original and claims no authority over anyone’s death.

The folklore’s repeated note is sobriety. An ending is named so the people left behind can tell the truth about it. Nothing here is a threat or a prediction.
