The third share

Hades is brother to Zeus and Poseidon. When the world is divided he receives the dead and the wealth under the ground. The Greeks often called him Pluto, the rich one, because ore, seed and the buried dead all sit in his country. He is not the devil of later folklore. He is the keeper of a house everyone enters.

His hall lies across a river. A coin pays the ferryman in the usual rite. Cerberus watches the gate. Famous cases are judged. Ordinary shades drink and forget. The geography is a moral map. Some fields are quiet, some are hard, and the house does not offer a second copy of the life you skipped.

Persephone and the returning grain

The Homeric Hymn to Demeter tells how Persephone comes to live part of the year below with Hades and part of the year above with her mother. Demeter withholds the grain until the bargain is struck. The pomegranate seeds are the reason the return is only partial. Winter and the new crop are the same contract.

Orpheus, Heracles and Odysseus all reach his country and have to leave by his rules. Music, strength and cunning can open a door. They do not repeal the house. Vault of Shadows is the original Hashpo persona taken from that public Hades.

Scenes the stories keep

Ruled what others feared to name. Avoided truths compound interest in the dark.

Guarded hidden wealth beneath the earth. Value often lives below the obvious surface.

Kept contracts with severe consistency. Boundaries are mercy when stated clearly.
