The mother on Snake Mountain

Coatlicue, the serpent skirt, is the mother of Huitzilopochtli in the Mexica birth story. She is sweeping on Coatepec when a ball of feathers descends. She conceives. Her other children, ashamed, gather to kill her. The new god is born in time and defends her. Later sculpture at the museum in Mexico City shows her as a figure of serpents, claws and a necklace of hands and hearts. Motherhood in this myth is not soft. It is the hill where a people says it began.

The Hashpo persona is original, drawn from that public mother of the patron god.

Scenes the stories keep

Wears a skirt of living serpents that compost endings into soil. Motherhood of earth includes decay as fertilizer.

Births warriors and still demands respect for the ground. Strength that forgets the soil collapses.

Appears when mortals treat creation as disposable. Honor the cycle or the cycle will honor you harshly.
