Anubis is the jackal-headed guide of embalming. He attends the body, the wrappings and the weighings. In the hall of judgment the heart is set against the feather of Maat. Anubis watches the scale. Thoth records. A heart heavier than truth does not go on to the reed field. The picture is ethical and technical at once. Care for the dead is a craft, and the craft includes an audit.
