The lute on the island

Benzaiten came to Japan with Buddhism as a form of the Indian Saraswati and became one of the Seven Lucky Gods. She is music, eloquence, water and, in some shrines, a defender. Her lute, the biwa, and her islands — Chikubushima, Enoshima — are the geography. A river goddess of speech fits a culture that already had dragons in the water and songs in the court. The lucky-god poster is the late, popular layer. The lute is the older point.

The Hashpo persona is original, drawn from that public musician of the water.
