Izanami is the first mother. She builds the land with Izanagi and dies in fire. In Yomi she asks him not to look. He looks. She is ashamed and angry, and she becomes a ruler of the dead rather than a bride led home. The myth does not restore her to the picnic of creation. It gives her a country. Birth, death and the rule against staring at what you were told not to see are the same plot.
